Cass and Oz Fikri turned the yard behind Narrandera's old Commonwealth Bank into a courtyard of palms, jukeboxes and mismatched furniture. Pull up a chair, order more than you think you need, and let the kids loose in the cubby house.

Since 2023

A coffee van, two little boys, and a town they found by accident.

Cass and Oz Fikri were Sydney people. Between them they had years in hotel and event management, a cafe and takeaway store, and a kebab shop they ran for twelve years. What they wanted was a slower way to raise their two boys.

They found Narrandera by chance, passing through on a road trip, and the town talked them into staying. As they put it themselves, they were hoping for somewhere quiet and peaceful and landed on the main street of a rural paradise, full of locals and travellers with old fashioned community values.

It took more than six months to build. The Yard opened in March 2023 in the yard of 80 East Street, where the old Commonwealth Bank once stood, and where a Video Ezy and a sewing shop came and went in between. The building is on the Narrandera Heritage tour.

“It feels surreal. We are just overwhelmed with the response from the community and so many locals lending us a hand to get ready.”

Cassie Fikri, Narrandera Argus

Off the grill

Greek and Turkish food, cooked to order.

Twelve years running a kebab shop leaves a mark on a menu. The souvlaki goes on the grill when you order it, the gozleme are folded by hand, and the jaffle press has never been busier.

  • Souvlaki

Fresh grilled, off the flame. Wrapped in pita with salad, or piled into a bowl if you want it without the bread.

  • Gozleme

Hand folded Turkish pastries. Feta and spinach, or lamb and spinach.

  • Jaffles

Proper old fashioned toasties, cheesy and hot. There is a jaffle of the week too, so ask what is on.

  • Quesadillas

The Mexican corner of the menu. Cheesy beef, or chipotle chicken.

  • Salad bowls

Fresh salad, hommus and grilled meat, for when you want something lighter.

  • Crepes and waffles

Lemon and passionfruit, or a topping of your choosing, with strawberries and banana.

Burritos and burrito bowls have been on since the day they opened, and the menu keeps moving. Ring through on 0412 191 103 for the jaffle of the week, to pre order a pickup, or to get it delivered to the house.

The gelato cart is the showstopper.

A pin up striped cart, a jukebox beside it, and a fringed umbrella over the top. Single, double or triple scoop, in a cup or a cone, with Nutella, Biscoff, maple or butterscotch over the top if you want it.

The Coco Lounge

Inside the old bank there are leather lounges, fairy lights, a disco ball and a shelf of books and board games. It doubles as the venue for their evening events, like the whiskey tasting nights with smoked meat, sliders and grazing boards.

Built so parents can actually finish a coffee.

Cass had just come out the other side of the toddler years when they built the place, and she knew exactly how hard it is to sit down with a coffee and a pram. So the yard has a kids area with a cubby house, a trampoline, a sandpit and a market stall, plus a chalkboard wall and a box of toy trucks. Room to move, and pram access that works.

I was travelling through Narrandera on my way from Adelaide to the Shoalhaven and stopped at The Yard for a quick bite. Mostly because it looked just like my kinda place, quirky and retro. I ordered the lamb souvlaki wrap with a sticky chai tea and steamed soy milk. It was so delicious, super fresh ingredients and exactly what I wanted! The chai was also really good and came with a piece of Turkish Delight in the side. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming. 100% recommend!

What a beautiful spot and outstanding food. For 30 minutes I was sitting under an umbrella in the Greek islands eating the fresh salad, homus and grilled lamb mince. This is a must do if you are anywhere near Narrandera
